Memories of your beloved horse
“The essential joy of being with horses is that it brings us in contact with the rare elements of grace, beauty, spirit and freedom”. – Sharon Ralls Lemon
Horses aren’t just pets; they’re a majestic and much-loved part of the family. They are truly magical beasts. Horses have the power to rid you of any negative energy, simply by being in their presence. Horses are loyal, trusting and for the past 35 years, have played a huge role in my life.
So, it was only natural that equine photography would become a large part of my photography business.
Our family here at Avedon are horse people – horse mad in fact, so we understand the extremely deep and special bond that humans and horses share. I will ensure this unique bond is captured for you and your horse.
About The Equine Photography Session
Every equine photography session is different and styled to suit you and your horse. Before your equine photography session, we will have a pre-session consultation to help establish the perfect location, styling and photography which will best suit you and your horse.
For example, many clients want formal photographs of their horse in dressage or competition gear, while others prefer a natural portrait of their horse.
While many clients prefer a mixture of both formal poses and portraits in a natural setting.
You may prefer a relaxed beach ride photography session or a more intimate forest or formal session. Maybe even a portrait on a black or white background or a mad-dash over logs or jumps.
Whatever style of portrait you prefer, our pre-session consultation will help me get to know you and your horse so I can capture the perfect photograph for you.
I will advise on styling, suggest grooming tips, ideas for plaits, and poses for you and your horse. And I will source the perfect location for your equine photography and help you prepare for the photography session. These tips include what to bring during the shoot to keep your horse happy and will ensure everything runs smoothly during your horse’s equine photography session.
Safety And Equine Photography
Many horse owners are concerned their horse may be uncooperative, timid or startle during the photography session. But because I have three horses; a bomb-proof pony, a fire-breathing dragon and a mischievous pony, I am well-equipped to deal with horses of all temperaments and personalities.
But I do have some tips and tricks up my photographer sleeve when it comes to dealing with horses. For example, as I have my arms full holding cameras during the photography session, I cannot hold your horse. Instead I’ll suggest alternative methods such as using long reins, or I’ll have you hold you horse until he/she feels safe. Your horse’s comfort and safety are of utmost importance and any safety precautions we use won’t impact your horse’s portrait. Elements such as reins and people can always be removed in post-production.
Equine Photography Preparation
As with all my photography sessions, I make sure it is a fun experience! Equine photography sessions take place in some of the most beautiful and scenic locations around Manawatu in New Zealand’s north island, or in the comfort of your own backyard. It all depends on you and your horse.
Whether your horse loves galloping along the beach, trotting through the forest, or racing around barrels, we will establish the perfect location for your equine photography session.
By the time your equine photography session arrives, we’ll be old friends. During the photography session we’ll share adventures, explore, and chat all about you and your horse. The afternoon will feel more like a relaxing afternoon ride with your horse with a side-of-photography thrown in.
How Long Do Equine Photography Sessions Last?
The equine photography sessions last approximately 45 minutes and are planned around you, your horse and your chosen location. Whatever you choose, I am happy to travel to any location that inspires you or brings you joy.
Most importantly, at the end of your horse’s photography session you will have some stunning images of your beloved horse.
