Creating a legacy of your much-loved pet
“Until one has loved an animal a part of one’s soul remains unawakened” – Anatole France
There are no truer words than those written above. I love animals. They bring me peace and happiness. Ever since I was a child, animals have played a huge part in my life and even today, nothing has changed. I am happiest when I’m surrounded by my beloved pets, just seeing their gorgeous faces makes the world a brighter place. My family currently consists of three humans, two pet sheep, three horses, one big cat and five dogs; two retired greyhounds, two retired working dogs and one German shepherd.
A few years ago, we adopted the most-handsomest retired greyhound named Moe. He was a beautiful, blue-brindle greyhound and was just 4.5 years old when he joined our family. One day while we were at work, my husband came home to find him lifeless in his bed. He’d suddenly and unexpectedly passed away while we were out.
I was absolutely devastated. I’d expected to have so much more time with him and hadn’t even taken any proper photos of him. All I had were blurry photos on my phone, none of which were good enough to print. I was so upset with myself for not taking photos of my beautiful Moe, I decided I needed to offer this as a service. It was important that families have the opportunity of portraits with their pets. Also, I never wanted anyone else to feel my pain of regret because I missed the chance of photos with my beloved boy Moe.
Over the past few years, I’ve provided families with their very last portrait of their beloved pet. A past client even confided that the album of their pet’s legacy session has brought them so much comfort and helped with the grieving process.
This is the importance of photography. This is the reason I introduced pet legacy sessions.
About The Legacy Session
It’s usual for families to book a legacy session after a pet is given a terminal diagnosis or their pet is aging and nearing the end of his or her life. Families book a legacy session to capture ‘one last family portrait’ of their much-loved pet and these sessions are treated with the utmost of urgency. Because of the nature of the legacy sessions, time is of the essence so I always make these photography sessions my top priority.
Because every pet is different and will have special needs depending on their age and condition, we will have a pre-session consultation which will help me get to know you and your pet. This will also help me source the appropriate location suited to your beloved pet.
I will also advise you on styling and share my tips on preparing your pet for the photo shoot. This will include grooming tips, what to bring during the shoot to keep your pet happy and hydrated and any dietary requirements your pet may have. This is so I can reward your pet with a treat for being such a superstar after their legacy shoot. All these tips will ensure your pet’s legacy photography session runs smoothly and your pet remains happy and comfortable.
How Long are Legacy Sessions?
The legacy sessions last approximately 45 minutes and are planned around you, the type of pet you have and your pet’s mobility.
Legacy sessions can take place in some of the most beautiful and scenic locations around Manawatu in New Zealand’s north island, or in the comfort of your own backyard. It all depends on you and your pet.
Whatever location you choose, a legacy session is about capturing moments of you with your much-loved pet, while they are still here. And afterwards, you’ll have cherished memories of your beloved pet which will bring you some much-needed comfort.
After The Legacy Session
After your pet’s legacy session, I will show you some of the beautiful and timeless products available at Avedon Photography. We will then schedule your online design meeting where your pet’s beautiful portraits will be revealed.
With so many emotive images it can be difficult to choose so I will help you decide on the perfect artwork to display your beloved pet’s photographs.
Avedon Photography offers products to suit every budget and prices range from $185 to $1790. Once you’ve chosen your desired artwork, we’ll finalise your order and discuss your payment options. Avedon Photography offers payment plans or payment is available through Fee Funders. Payment is required at the time of your design meeting.
All artwork comes with Avedon Photography’s care guide and a lifetime guarantee and your finished artwork will be ready for collection approximately 4-6 weeks after payment is received.
